West Island, Fairhaven, Mass
The dominate bird at this location was the Brant’s who were close to shore feeding. A rather large flock of approximately 50+ birds. Other birds besides the gulls were Red-breasted Mergansers and a crow.
The causeway leading to the island in the distance were a scattering of Common Eiders and a large raft of Greater Scaup. A smaller flock of Scaup were feeding near shore but were really nervous and would frequently swim out seemingly for unknown reasons. I exited the car to try and approach them but they immediately began to swim out. No photo opportunities here.
Before leaving the area I stopped at the overlook at the end of Edgewater Street. More birds at this location but far from shore.
Throughout the cove small flocks of Buffleheads that eventually formed one large flock. It was one of the largest Bufflehead Duck flocks I have seen to date. I quickly counted over 100 birds. There was also a large flock of Mallards of about the same size.
Although all the birds in each location were extremely far away the best photo ops of the day was of a Herring Gull and the Brant’s.

Nice series Andy. The first one where one of the birds is about to land is awesome. Perfect timing
Thanks!
