Canada Geese Antics at Oliver Mill Park

By Andy, Monday, January 25, 2010

Bird Man of Bridgewater reported on his blog of a small flock of Hooded Mergansers and a Bufflehead Duck in the beginning of January. For me, it’s been tough getting close to these ducks and I have yet to find a good spot for me to hide and ambush them. Although, I do have a place in mind but it has been iced up. Ducks like the open water.

As a result, I made a visit to Olive Mill Park figuring my chances of getting close may be favorable. No Hooded Mergansers or Buffleheads this visit but Canada Geese were present. Maybe next time.

As I watched the geese in the water and walked around. Suddenly, a flock of geese appeared from the treetops and as they flew directly overhead their “bombs” hit the water around me with a plunk-splash, plunk-splash.  I quickly covered my camera first then me (priorities  are in order here!).  I emerged from my hooded coat that now covered my head to find that they narrowly missed me. It was an extremely close call and I am glad their marksmanship was off.

Buttonwood Park

By Andy, Saturday, May 16, 2009

A quick visit to Buttonwood Park Lake to check on ducklings and goslings. I was not disappointed as both were there.

After looking through the camera viewfinder, I looked up and this face greeted me.

The face that surprised me!

Also in the area was: Baltimore Oriole’s, Yellow Warblers, Gray Catbirds, Grackles, Ring-billed Gulls, Pigeons, Muscovy Ducks, Canada Geese, a lone Greylag Goose, Mallards, Eastern Kingbird, Red-winged Blackbirds and Swallows skimming the water.
